Electric hedge trimmers are convenient to use in small gardens and they are also quiet to use and are quite popular

. However, I have found that there are four key reasons which I have outlined below that explain why more gardeners are choosing a petrol hedge trimmer than ever before.

First of all, with busy lives and with the weather forecast not being as accurate as it could be, it is not always easy to know when the weather will be dry for hedge cutting. It is very unsafe to use a mains electric hedge trimmer in damp or rainy conditions. With a petrol hedge trimmer, wet weather is not a bar to getting the hedge cut safely.

Secondly you will find that electric hedge trimmers do not have the same amount of power that the petrol ones do. Two stroke engines are lightweight and very reliable and a petrol hedge trimmer can be angled to cut shaped or tall hedges without difficulty. If you do basic maintenance on your trimmer, you will find that you can use it regularly and cut through thick, twigs and brush with ease - and go on doing so for a long time to come.

Thirdly, it can sometimes be difficult to provide electricity to the whole of the garden, especially if it is large. If you have a petrol trimmer there are no problems at all in using it anywhere you need to which puts it ahead of an electric one in my view.

Fourthly and most importantly for some, the safety considerations of using a petrol hedge trimmer are that there is no cord which could be cut by accident or which could be tripped over whilst working in the garden. If an electric cord should get caught in branches, particularly if you are up a ladder working on a high hedge, this could present a serious hazard.

In conclusion, I would recommend a petrol hedge trimmer to anyone who has a big property that it is tricky to reach all corners of with an electric cable. If you need to use a hedge trimmer a lot, you need a machine that is both reliable and durable and if you have a busy life, a petrol trimmer is ideal if you do not have time to wait for the rain to stop!
