Four Plumbing Problems And How To Solve Them

? If so, it might be tempting to call in a plumber. A professional will certainly help, but a little DIY could also do the trick.

Here are four plumbing problems and how to solve them:

A blocked toilet

Toilet paper, ear buds, cotton wool and other foreign objects can block your loo so be careful what you throw down the pan. If a blockage does occur, lower a toilet plunger over the drain and pump it up and down ten times. You should hear the water drain away, but if you dont wriggle some plumbing wire into the system and push past anything nasty. Still having problems? Then get hold of a drain snake or contact an appliance repair company for help and advice.

A continuously running toilet

The sound from a continuously running toilet can be irritating, so its important to solve the problem quickly. Check the condition of the flapper valve (the rubber seal found at the bottom of the tank) and make sure the ballcock washer is in a good condition. If these parts look old and worn, head to your nearest DIY store and replace them. Once thats done, check the length of the chain connecting the arm lever to the rubber flapper valve (as it might be letting water through) and examine the position of the float ball.

A leaky tap

Did you know that a dripping tap can waste more than 5,500 litres of water a year? Thats right, according to the Energy Saving Trust; leaking faucets are incredibly inefficient, so make repairs as soon as possible. Start by holding the spout and unscrewing the tap nut. Check the condition of the washer and replace it if necessary. Finally, tighten up the bolt and see if the problem has been resolved. If it hasnt, you may need to replace the whole tap, so consult a plumber if youre not sure what to do.

A clogged sink

A clogged sink can be extremely inconvenient, particularly if you have got guests, or mountains of washing up to do. Cleaning plates in the bath just isnt sustainable, so get hold of a plunger and try to get rid of the blockage. If that doesnt work, use a length of plumbing wire to clear the plughole and wait for the water to drain away. When the sink is clear, pour some drain cleaner into the drains and wash it away with warm water. If the same issue keeps occurring, take out plumbing and drainage cover and have your pipes professionally cleaned.
