Four Reasons You Should Choose A Saas Based Apm Solution

Software-as-a-Service has become hugely popular in many markets

. Unfortunately, IT application management is not one of them. Why is it that so many vendors are reluctant to offer SaaS APM (Monitoring-as-a-Service)? More importantly, why are so few organizations reluctant to adopt SaaS APM offerings? In a world where applications are moving to the cloud, and everything is available as-a-Service, it no longer makes sense for APM to be in the physical datacenter. Here are the top reasons why you should consider a SaaS APM offering.

1. TIME-TO-VALUE

It might seem simple but its important: with SaaS, you can get started monitoring your app in a matter of minutes. With on premise APM solutions you always have to provision at least one server for the monitoring data, which is both expensive and time-consuming. With SaaS it doesnt take long to know if youll get value out of an APM solution sign up for a free trial, and within half an hour youll know whether or not the solution is the one for you.

Even better, many APM vendors have partnered with cloud providers to embed their agents within your cloud applications (which by default come with only limited Server monitoring metrics). Some of these customers have found lurking production problems less than an hour after deploying a Java application monitoring tool in their cloud environment. With the cloud and SaaS APM together, solving performance problems has never been easier.

2. COST LICENSES, MAINTENANCE, ADMINISTRATION, HARDWARE

Subscription based licenses are cheaper, more flexible and less risky than perpetual licenses. This might not be immediately apparent after all, if you stay with the company for several years, wouldnt it have been cheaper to buy the software outright? Perhaps, but usually perpetual licenses dont include maintenance, let alone the cost of managing the servers collecting monitoring data. 3. MIGRATING TO THE LATEST RELEASE

APM vendors usually release a major update to their software at least once a year, and migrating to the latest release can be a painful process for on premise customers. With SaaS APM, however, the vendors are responsible for the migration to the latest release. As a customer you dont have to do anything to get the latest and greatest.

4. SCALABILITY

Large organizations often have several applications spanning several thousand servers. Deploying an APM solution across an environment like this is a huge undertaking, but its made much easier if the vendor is responsible for the management hardware. Let the provisioning of additional servers be their headache, not yours.

SaaS APM may not be for everyone, but for most organizations the benefits of choosing SaaS outweigh the costs and concerns.
