Four Ways To Improve Your Likeability On An Offshore Oil Rig

Perhaps you have considered getting a job on an offshore oil rig. There is a unique challenge you will face that is very different from other working situations. You won't be able to leave the work site at the end of your shift. So knowing how to get along with others becomes extremely important.

There will always be personality and attitude differences on any job. And there are bound to be conflicts at times. However, there are some things we can do to reduce or at least anticipate these awkward moments.

Consider a recent first impression experience. Do you regret how you handled the situation? Could you have done things differently? The sad thing about first impressions is, they are hard to overcome. People tend to look for evidence to reinforce their first views. This can become a real challenge on an offshore oil rig. So the following four suggestions can go a long way towards making a good first impression.

People generally want to be liked. When you extend yourself in friendship, you give the impression that you like the other. And they tend to reciprocate that. So if you smile first...they will often smile back. It can be a starting point of a good first impression.

Who doesn't like to be served? It is just human nature. So when another offers help, they are in fact serving the other. And generally that is not rejected. So being helpful, reinforces a good working relationship.

To the extent you are able, remain positive. There will be many things wanting to drag you down on an oil rig. But when you keep a good attitude, it tends to be infectious. So look for the positives and not the negatives.

If you had your choice of working around a rigid or flexible person, who would you choose? Most of us prefer the more flexible person if we have a choice. Being stubborn tends to block the path to any real progress. So remain flexible and increase a positive working environment.

The one truth about an offshore oil rig job is, you can't get away from people. Most jobs involve working closely with others. But this is a strange environment in that regard. Unless you have had extended stay experiences with others, it is a real challenge to understand.

Some people really thrive on being around others. But no matter how much you enjoy the company of others, you will get on each others nerves from time to time. So by making some persoanal adjustments, it is possible to create a more positive working environment on an oil rig.
