Free Online Games: Sorting Out The Different Genres

RPG, FPS, RTS, MMORPG. What are these and what are their differences? There are a lot of game types, more formally called "genres", that are available out there. Some of these can be played online, while others can be downloaded for free from different websites. If you are still wading through the different types of games, here's a list of them to help you out.
First, let's take the RPG or role-playing game genre. A role playing game usually takes long hours to complete. Many RPG titles may be found in free game downloads sites. Others are commercially available. The most popular RPG titles include Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire and Dragon Warrior, among others. The major characteristic of an RPG game is that it involves many characters. The object of the game is for the player to build and develop these characters until they are strong enough to tackle obstacles and fight enemies.
Second, there are offshoots of the RPG, called the MORPG or multiplayer online role-playing game, and the MMORPG, or massively multiplayer online role-playing game. These genres are online-based, which means they can only be played by connecting to the internet. While in the game, players get to interact with other players real-time through their avatars. An MMORPG, such as World of Warcraft, for example is a broad-based MORPG in terms of the number of players that access and play the game at any time.
Third, there are also FPG or first person shooters, some of which are also available as free games. These games are often multiplayers also, while there are some that are restricted to single players. Some of the top FPG titles include Half-Life, Counterstrike and Doom, among many others. In first person shooters, the player assumes a character who wields different types of weapons. The player negotiates the course while he views the surroundings from the first person perspective. The objective of the game is usually to successfully get past the obstacles and kill off as many of the enemies that you encounter. Multiplayer FPG games allow players to play free for all, team games, or other types.
Fourth, there is also what they call real time strategy or RTS, which may be in the form of free online games or free game downloads. The objective of RTS games is to encourage the players to craft strategies as you go through the fast-paced game environment. Examples of RTS games are Starcraft, World of Warcraft and Command and Conquer. These games typically take time to play because they require you to build anything from communities to armies, make your armies strong enough to defeat enemies as you level up.
Fifth, there are also sports games that allow the players to play virtually, assuming the role of real-life players of the NBA, NFL or PGA Tour Golf. Other types of sports games include skateboarding, snowboarding and tennis.
Finally, other genres include racing and puzzler games. Racing games allow players to play the role of racers and ride it rough in the world's racing courses. Puzzlers, on the other hand, can be anything from virtual chess, checkers, crosswords and the like.
