Basic #1: Fling and Tinder and Simple wood are things you should always keep on you so you can cook when you are waiting on something. For example, when you're waiting on group members for a dungeon or when you're waiting on your ride across the ocean you can be leveling your cooking.

Basic #2: It's not how much you cook but what you cook. Now this won't really matter until you're getting higher levels in cooking, but you want to always cook the foods that give buffs along with them. These will sell well at the AH, especially higher level foods.

Basic #3: Holiday quests will bring along some great profit for those with a high enough cooking skill - especially in the winter. The winter holiday quests offer some great things, such as cookies, that will give great buffs for anyone that eats them and will also be needed for quests. When you pick up a good WoW cooking guide, you should find a list of all the items needed for these holiday quests.

Basic #4: Don't sell any of the meats or eggs that you get from loot. Most animals will drop some type of meat or eggs when you kill them, and even at lower levels, you will be able to use these to up your cooking skill. Don't sell these items, or you'll find yourself grinding them again.

Basic #5: Cooking quests are your friend! You can actually earn a lot of gold by doing the daily cooking quests once you get to a high enough cooking level. While it might take you a bit to gather up the materials for them, the rewards are really good and you will want to do these daily so you can reap the rewards of them.
