If not, then s/he's methods will likely be antiquated...AND... so will the methods used in your counseling.

Unfortunately, many counselors often participate in a bare minimum of continuing education because it interferes with leisure time. Importantly, new therapy methods may have been developed that meet your needs more rapidly or achieve your ends more permanently.

Without participating in continuing education your therapist may have never heard of them. Through continuing education, your therapist should be able to treat you with the same methods that are used at the most scholarly institutions like the University of Chicago, Harvard, the Mayo Clinic and other renowned hospitals.

These methods include cognitive therapy, psychological testing, dialectical therapy, solution-focused treatment and the behaviorally-based therapeutic approaches. Each counseling tool should be masterfully applied to deliver the best results to you in the briefest amount of time.

So ask if your therapist stays on top of the newest psychological advances by regularly participating in continuing education and seminars.

4. Find a therapist who displays authentic concern for your quality of life. A Prompt Consultation Policy is just one example.

Don't consult a counselor who ignores you, leaving you to wait after you promptly arrive at his or her office. Ask the counselor if his patients are scheduled so that they don't get backed-up.

Barring an unexpected emergency, you should not have to wait more than 10 minutes.

5. Screen for enthusiasm when he or she makes an appointment for you. If, in making an appointment, the therapist displays an arrogant " I'm awfully busy, wait in line" attitude run for the hills. Impersonal commercial practices will often tell you that you have to wait days or weeks...without giving it a second thought!

A psychological counselor should display concern by providing you with an appointment in 7 days or less. If necessary, he or she should also have appointments available in the evenings or Saturdays to make it easier on you and your work schedule.

6. Also, be sure your therapist will work smoothly with your health plan so you have no billing headaches. The office should do all the paperwork. Also, be sure you only have to make your small co-pay at each visit.
