Function of ACLS Algorithms

In layman language we can describe an algorithm as a set of instructions to solve a particular problem. It gives a clear direction to follow in any situation. If the algorithm fails to guide the user then the actual task is also dashed to the ground. When we talk about ACLS algorithms then they can be defined as a set of those guidelines which are used in advanced cardiac life support. It begins with analyzing patient's heart beat count with the help of a manual defibrillator. This set of instructions is laid down by the health organizations like AHA (American Heart Association).

The current ACLS guidelines are set into several sections of algorithms'. This set of instructions is followed to assimilate the treatment and uplift its effectiveness. Algorithms are usually displayed in the form of flowcharts which makes it easier for the user to understand and follow the same.

The treatment for the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, ventricular fibrillation and pulse less ventricular tachycardia is known as Defibrillation. It is the actual treatment for such cardiac disorders. There is a device known as defibrillator with the help of which a patient's heart gets a therapeutic dose of electrical energy. This device is used by a physician or an equally learned professional of medical field because it needs an expertise and knowledge. At times the process of defibrillation fails to yield expected results, it happens due to lack of skill and ability of providers who are unable to recognize and treat the underlying causes of the arrhythmia.

ACLS algorithms are based on likeness of clinical sequence of events to boost active participation through learning stations. Students practice essential skills individually. Moreover they get to learn working in a team. There are many other ACLS algorithms such as electrical cardio version algorithm, ventricular fibrillation and pulse less ventricular tachycardia algorithm, a systole algorithm, ischemic chest pain algorithm, Brady cardio algorithm and tachycardia algorithm and effective resuscitation team dynamics. All of these are important steps of the ACLS algorithms.

ACLS algorithms ask first for searching for potential causes of arrest then correct them. Following are the essential points of ACLS algorithm:

1. Be cautious before using epinephrine in arrests.

2. In PEA arrests associated with hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia. or Ca2+ channel blocking drug overdose, give 10mL 10% calcium chloride (IV) (6.8 mmol/L)

3. Consider amiodarone for ventricular fibrillation/Pulseless ventricular tachycardia after 3 attempts at defibrillation.

4. For torsades de pointes, refractory VF in patients with digoxin toxicity or hypomagnesaemia, give IV magnesium sulfate 8 mmol (4mL of 50% solution)
