Funeral Embalming: Is It The Right Choice?

Traditionally embalming is the preparation of a dead body to prevent decay

. The method dates back to ancient Egypt and many of the bodies embalmed during this period are still preserved today. Modern funeral embalming, on the other hand, serves only to maintain the appearance of the body to allow it to be suitable for the funeral and provides no long-term preservation. Funeral embalming is by no means essential but aims to make the body look as they did before death for the viewing or vigil.

The decision to embalm

A funeral can quickly become expensive to organise and as embalming is not a necessity and can be costly it begs the question as to whether it is the right decision. For some people it will be a purely financial choice, for others it will be based upon personal views. Below are some points to aid you in your decision: What are your personal views on embalming? Unfortunately, even when funeral arrangements have been discussed prior to death, embalming is very rarely mentioned. Discuss any questions or queries you have regarding funeral embalming with the funeral directors. For some people it is preferable to be able to view an embalmed body, however for others the idea of the process may be too upsetting. Will there be an open casket at the funeral? Who will view the body before the burial? Generally speaking, the more people who will see the body the more likely you are to wish to use embalming. Often the decision to embalm the body will be determined by how long there will be between the death and the burial. Remember that whilst having your loved one look their best can feel important, choosing familiar clothes and ensuring they have their glasses, make-up or perfume on can be equally if not more important and embalming can alter the facial features somewhat. Will environmental issues prevent you from using funeral embalming? Check with the funeral directors whether the burial site allows embalming. Appropriately one week after the burial, the chemicals used for funeral embalming will return to the earth.

Whether or not you decide to use funeral embalming is ultimately your decision, do not let friends, relatives or funeral directors decide for you. There is no right or wrong decision; the right choice is simply the one you feel most comfortable with. Keep in mind that the procedure will have no long term effect but may provide comfort before the funeral for those who wish to view the deceased.
