In 1970 Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) launched the first GIS software which has since then taken the technology driven corporate world by storm. GIS is used to digitally represent regular information or database on our day to day life, such as a school location or a weather data, in maps. These maps may then be used for all sorts of analyses related to population growth, weather forecasting, marketing analysis, land use planning, disaster management program, road safety etc.

It's a computer based information system, GIS that is, and it converts analog into a digital form. What forms the fundamental basis of this system is that all objects on Earth can be geo-referenced, that is every thing can be described by coordinate referencing system.
A specific GIS is developed for a specific purpose or application, and that may not be compatible with the GIS developed for a separate purpose or application.
English geographer, Roger F. Tomlinson is widely regarded as the father of GIS. It took place in Canada in 1960, when Tomlinson was working in the Canadian government, when he developed the Canada Geographic Information System which was used in regulatory procedures of land use management and resource monitoring. The system has gradually evolved to revolutionize database management and analysis.
Today GIS is being increasingly implemented by companies, agencies, academic institutions, and governments worldwide. It's used in Banking, Insurance, Logistics, Media, Real Estate, Retail Business, Military, Emergency Services, Law Enforcement, Health, Libraries, Museums, Research, Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, Electricity, Telecommunications and in a plethora of other sectors.
ESRI is arguably one of the world leaders in GIS. It started off with organizing and analyzing geographic information in order to support land planners and land resource managers in making important decisions regarding the environment.
