Galaxidi Greece Roadtrip
Galaxidi is a small coastal community near Delphi in Central Greece
. Its harbour lies in the Gulf of Corinth but the locality is accessible by buses that run the 48/E65 national road. This road connects Galaxidi to Itea and Naupactus. The town is situated 10 km south of Ikea which is about 30 km south of Amfissa and Lamia.
Before the turn of the 19th century Galaxidi had a considerable marine fleer and was generally a rich commercial centre. This fact is evident in the style and size of the local structures and buildings. The local government did its part in the preservation of the architectural wonders of Galaxidi and that definitely helped build-up tourism in the area over the last few decades. The Galaxidi Marine Museum displays pieces from its history.
In modern city standards, Galaxidi is really small. The town has a primary school and high school. It has several bakeries, three churches, a bank, post office and three squares. A few splotches of fields are dedicated to farming while there are some locals who have gone into commercial fish farming.
Galaxidi also consist of the villages of Ayioi Pantes, Vounihora and Penteoria. A road at the back of the town leads to the Monastery of the Metamorphosis which is actually a convent. The site offers a great view of the city. On a bright and clear day, you can see the Peloponnese as you face south.
There are pensions, hotels, tavernas, cafs, bars, restaurants and other such attractions in Galaxidi. There are beaches, boat moorings, archaeological sites and historical buildings all over the place. You can never get tired of looking and admiring the neutrals, browns, clays and terra-cotta colours of Galaxidis scape against a backdrop of greens in the south and brilliant blues in the north.
The Church of St. Nicholas is famous for its carved wooden icon screen. The Ayia Paraskevi is also a church with a unique zodiac cycle in its altar and a sundial in the front court.
The Archeological Collection of Galaxidi is home to the many archaeological finds in the municipality and in the surrounding areas. The Nautical Museum of Galaxidi displays a collection of paintings that depict sailing ships and boats, carved wooden figures of women, logbooks of ships, archaic nautical instruments and even registers of the municipalitys past and present ships.
Held every Thursday is the Merchants Market. This weekly bazaar is something to look forward to due to the numerous treasures and finds you can buy here.
There are several events held in Galaxidi all through the year. In February the Flour Wars Carnival is held whereas the Nautical Week is on every June.
