Entertaining, relaxing by a pond or a pool, barbecues, a child's play ground, your flower and vegetable gardens. You will also be considering the types, varieties and number of plants you'll be using.

Before spending the money on an architect or landscape designer do a little research and see if you can come up with a plant you like on your own. You may not need to go through as much money that way.
3. My son in law and daughter have a huge yard with lots of flower gardens and they feel obligated to spend time working on the yard that they would rather be spending doing other things. If you decide your free times are for outings and travel then a low maintenance garden and landscape is best. If you have groundskeepers then obviously that is not a consideration. If you want to use that grounds as a way to putter and relax then more may be better.
