Asters, these giants will add colour to a colourless area, and can grow to two feet high and spread out just as far, the flowers can be five inches across. The plants love the full sun, and because they need lots of room they should be planted 12 to 18 inches apart.

Make a wonderful show along a path with marigolds and petunias. Marigolds can either be planted in the garden or in containers on a patio, but in the garden, they act as an insect repellent, and their beautiful flowers bloom in bright yellow, gold and orange.

Like the marigolds, petunias also act as an insect repellent and they are a favourite annual, because apart from creating a stunning display in borders they look just as beautiful in hanging baskets. Scented geraniums add scent to gardens with unusual scents such as cinnamon, peppermint, lemon, and look wonderful in containers and they also like the sun. As do sunflowers, as their name indicates and they can of course grow to 10 feet tall, so you need a spot that will not obscure anything else that is trying to make a show in your garden.

The begonia plant is a wonderful addition to a garden, and the flowers are very popular spring flowers, as they come in dazzling to soothing colours, the flowers can be large or small, single or double petaled, male and female flowers borne on single plants.
