Gardening With Water Elements

Water elements in gardening can take the form of waterfalls

, ponds, fountains, or pools. All of those can be enhanced by rock, natural mulch such as pine straw, and gorgeous elements such as lighting, plants, or even live fish. Having a water feature in your personal garden space can enhance the mood and atmosphere of the area, making it much more relaxing and inviting for you and your guests.

One of the most important things to consider in gardening of any type is the location. Certain types of plants and fish need plenty of sunlight, so places in direct light away from trees and bushes are likely the best place. This will also help to prevent leaves and debris from collecting in the water features.

When planning for a water garden first decides the size of the water feature you want. This will depend partially on how much money you are willing to invest in your space since water features can get pricey the more features you add. Also consider the size of your property, and the amount of time you want to spend with maintaining your water feature or features.

One of the main difficulties with water is keeping water clear of algae. Algae problems are usually caused from too many nutrients in the water, either from feeding fish too often, or from over fertilizing plants. If ponds are designed correctly and are maintained properly, algae problems can be kept at a minimum. Keep in mind moving water usually collects algae at a much slower rate than standing water.

All types of garden pools regardless of their size will need maintenance throughout the year. With proper planning you can ensure a healthy balance between living and decorative features of a water feature. You can minimize maintenance by installing a filter system, or by periodically replacing existing water with fresh water. There are also some chemicals that can be used, like chlorine for cleaning features that do not include fish or plants.

Having water features is a beautiful way to enhance your garden and maintenance really does not take any more of your time than regular gardening might. The sight and sound of trickling water is relaxing and de-stressing after a long day. Imagine a warm summer evening on your back deck, sipping a glass of ice cold lemonade and just listening to the water flow. It could easily become your reality.
