Garmin Traffic Receiver - What You Need to Know

A Garmin traffic receiver is required for a Garmin GPS to receive and display traffic information.

All Garmin traffic GPS are capable of accepting traffic information from a Garmin traffic receiver and displaying the traffic information on the GPS. Garmin sells some of these with the receiver and subscription included in the box. On the rest, you must purchase the traffic receiver and subscription to the traffic service separately.

The current Garmin GPS that include the receiver and the subscription in the box can be identified by the suffix "T" at the end of the GPS name. Example: Garmin Nuvi 1490T.

An interesting point about the receiver, it is not located in the GPS. Actually, the traffic receiver is in the power plug that plugs into the cigarette lighter to power and / or charge the GPS. The same cord that powers the GPS also carries the traffic data from the receiver in the power plug to the GPS.

The Garmin traffic receivers are:

o GTM(TM) 10 Service Provider - Traffic Message Channel, Plug Type - USB mini-B style plug

o GTM(TM) 12 Service Provider - Traffic Message Channel, Plug Type - USB mini-B style plug

o GTM(TM) 20 Service Provider - Traffic Message Channel, Plug Type - 18-pin flat plug

o GTM(TM) 20 with lifetime traffic Service Provider - NAVTEQ, Plug Type - 18-pin flat plug

o GTM(TM) 21 Service Provider - NAVTEQ, Plug Type - 18-pin flat plug

o GTM(TM) 25 with lifetime traffic Service Provider - NAVTEQ, Plug Type - USB mini-B style plug

The main differences between these Garmin receivers are the traffic service you receive and the style of the plug on the cord that plugs into the GPS. The plug styles are the USB mini-B style plug or the 18-pin flat plug.

If you purchase a Garmin GPS that includes traffic ("T" suffix), one of these FM receivers will be in the box with your GPS and you will be ready to go.

If you purchased a traffic GPS without the receiver, you will need to purchase the correct Garmin traffic receiver for your GPS. To find the correct FM traffic receiver, go to the "Traffic Receivers" page on the Garmin website. Each FM receiver lists the compatible GPS units that work with it.

The resource information below tells where to find additional information about which Garmin traffic receiver to use with your GPS.
