Gastric Bypass Surgery Helps To Curb Obesity In Cincinnati

Cincinnati is home to many great restaurants with cuisines ranging from Asian

, Latin, Italian and everything in between. For people suffering from obesity, however, these exciting dining options represent a troubling temptation. Some fear that even if they began losing significant weight that hunger will drive them to regain it. A new study shows that gastric bypass surgery is not only an excellent treatment for morbid obesity, it can also curb hunger in those who lose weight with it. With the gastric bypass surgery options available in Ohio, obese people can bring their weight to healthy levels and enjoy Cincinnatis delicious food in moderation.

Gastric bypass surgery leads to weight loss by reducing the amount of food the patient can eat and the number of calories absorbed into the stomach. In order to do this, a surgeon must staple a small section of stomach into a pouch which feeds directly into the Roux pouch of the intestines. If the patient does not adhere to a proper diet, the stomach pouch can stretch and lead to weight regain, but the new study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrates how the surgery can reduce the temptation to eat unhealthy.

The study in question was conducted at the Interdisciplinary Obesity Center at Kantonsspital St. Gallen in Rorschach, Switzerland. Dr. Bernd Schultes, who led the study, reported that gastric bypass surgery can help the body regulate what is called hedonic hunger. Hedonic hunger is the urge to eat for reasons other than actual physical hunger, usually to relieve stress or to manage other emotions. The obese patient group observed who had recently undergone gastric bypass had much lower hunger urges than the obese group who had not undergone the procedure.

The study lends further evidence to efficacy of gastric bypass surgery. Those who are interested in learning more about gastric bypass and other bariatric procedures should schedule a seminar with a board certified surgeon.
