General Car Maintenance Everyone Should Practice

Every person who drives a car should understand the fact that a vehicle is going

to require general car maintenance to run at its most efficient and to maintain the ability to provide a safe mode of transportation. The minimal costs of this type of preventive maintenance can save a driver the costs of expensive repairs later on down the line. A vehicle operator does not even need to know how to perform the preventive upkeep themselves, simply being responsible enough to hire a competent professional is enough.

Changing the Oil is A Must

Being a responsible car owner comes with several responsibilities and taking care of oil changes on a regular basis is one of them. All cars should have their oil changed every 3,000 and 10,000 miles. The more often a car is driven the sooner the oil should be changed. Where as a car that is not driven everyday can have the oil changed less often. Over time the oil breaks down because to the heat it is exposed to as a vehicle runs.

As the oil breaks down it becomes less and less effective for lubricating the engine and protecting it from wear. That means that parts of your car are rubbing against each other causing possible long term damage to your engine. With a multitude of ten minute oil change places available virtually everywhere a driver has many easy options when it comes to changing your engine oil. You can even learn to do this all by yourself, all you need is to understand is how to drain the oil and dispose of it appropriately.

Tire Alignment and Tire Care

A vehicle driver should always make sure that the tires on a vehicle are properly inflated and have plenty of tread on them. Without a good pair of tires a vehicle will not be able to perform at its peak level. Poor tires can affect your gas mileage. A driver should always make sure that the tire pressure is at an appropriate level so that a vehicle will run as efficiently as possible. Lastly keeping up with the wheel alignment will make sure that tires don't wear out early. You will know if you need a wheel alignment if tires show uneven wear of there is a shaking feeling when you drive. Shaking can also be a symptom of a bad bearing so if this persists, go see your mechanic as soon as possible.

Do a Fluid Check Regularly

This fluid check will not take a mechanic to complete anybody can do it. Start with checking the level of engine coolant. Most cars today have an overflow that has lines on it which indicate where the level of coolant should be. Just fill that overflow to that limit and you will be good. This is important because if you have a low radiator level your engine may overheat. Coolant is inexpensive, a new motor is definitely not. Checking other fluids like the power steering fluid or the oil should be done on a regular basis. If the power steering fluid is low, then add some more. If the oil is low, then refer to the above tip.
