Anxiety is described as a diffuse, unpleasant, vague sense of apprehension, with or without associated autonomic symptoms. The term anxiety is derived from the Latin word "anxitas" meaning "troubled in mind". Normal anxiety alerts an individual of impending danger and enables one to take precautionary or corrective measures.
Pathological anxiety is characterized either by exaggerated response to stress or anxiety in absence of stress. Common clinical features of anxiety are described as emotional contents like tension, irritability, apprehension, fear, thought contents like obsessions, ruminations, distractibility and physical contents like psychomotor agitation, insomnia, loss of appetite, loss of libido, palpitations, diarrhoea and sweating etc. Symptoms of anxiety can also be classified as psychological like early insomnia, irritability, inability to concentrate and somatic like tremor, sweating, palpitation, breathlessness and headache etc.
In Unani medicine, psychiatric diseases were dealt in detail under the heading of "amraze nafsaniya" where they defined various symptoms of psychic faculty and their distortion due to the involvement of vitiated humours especially "safra" and "sauda"Anxiety disorders are, as such, not mentioned in Unani literature but their symptoms either separate or with cluster of others in different diseases, are described under various headings like "malankholia", "waswas" "mania", "sahar'', "tawahhush", "hizyan", "ishque" and "khafqan" etc .
The term "izterab" is used for anxietyin Arabic and Unani texts and the word "Nafsani" is added to izterab to specify its psychological state. Literally izterabe nafsani stands for worry, fear and excessive thinking. It is also used in the meaning of hindrance in routine workU8.
Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-1V) categories anxiety disorders in ten groups, among them Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is most common. GAD is characterized by generalized and persistent symptoms of anxiety which are driven by worry that affects many aspect of life. The pathological worry is considered to be defining feature of GAD. The contents of these worries usually covers several domains, primarily concerns with the one's family, finance, work, social functions and personal health. Individuals with this disorder usually describe themselves as sensitive or nervous by nature, and their tendency to worry is usually long standing or at least of several months duration. Long standing worry and anxiety may contribute to excessive tiredness, tension, headache, fatigue, sweating, increase frequency of micturition, epigastric disturbances and insomnia
