Georgian Conservatories Are Both Attractive And Popular

If you are looking to build a conservatory to add value to your home

, or just because they are attractive additions to any home, then you may want to consider Georgian conservatories as these are a very popular style and look good.

For those who do not know anything about Georgian styles, Georgian architecture is the name given in most English-speaking countries to the set of architectural styles current between 1720 and 1840. Georgian architecture remains perennially popular. Perhaps of all British buildings, those built by the Georgians are best received. Most think of the many elegant town developments, the tree-lined terraces, select squares and crescents that proliferated after 1740; or else they visualise the great houses surrounded by an Arcadian landscape of temples, follies and serpentine lakes.

Very few Georgian conservatories were built apart from those attached to or in the grounds of stately homes as this was the period before the Victorian mania for conservatories took off and engineering that allowed the marriage of glass, wrought iron and wood. Todays Georgian conservatories are really only conservatories that have been inspired by the period rather than reproductions of what were built at the time.

The Georgian conservatory style features a flat front and a square or rectangular symmetrical shape. This makes the Georgian conservatory a really handy shape for laying out furniture and plants, with no wasted space. The Georgian conservatory typically has a high, sloping roof style that gives a spectacular vaulted effect. Your conservatory floods with light, making it a bright, airy and uplifting room. Georgian Architecture is typified by symmetry and proportions and many properties, especially those built between 1714 and 1760, were inspired by Palladian architecture that was then the height of fashion.

Georgian architecture was the style of the 18th century, especially from the reign of King George I who ascended the throne in 1711, until the American Revolution (King George III).

Identifying features (1700 - c.1780):

A simple 12 story box, 2 rooms deep, using strict symmetry arrangements

Panel front door centred, topped with rectangular windows (in door or as a transom) and capped with an elaborate crown/entablature supported by decorative pilasters

Cornice embellished with decorative mouldings, usually dentil work

Multi-pane windows are never paired, and fenestrations are arranged symmetrically (whether vertical or horizontal), usually 5 across

Georgian fret is applied between the panes of glass to simulate the style of traditional Georgian windows. Georgian fret bars come in a selection of colours along with shapes that create original centre pieces within the glass. The characteristic mid-Georgian sash window was usually of six-over-six or eight-over-eight panes. However as the 18th century progressed this was superseded by windows that were larger in size and four-over-four or even two-over-two panes.

Glazing bars grew thinner and the whole look much more refined. These wonderful glazing bars are very hard to replace and often of the highest quality. If you are looking to maintain a property with Georgian windows or Georgian fret, you will need patience and expertise.
