German Bundesliga - Mainz defeats Bayern Munich by 2-1

The FSV Mainz 05 of the German Bundesliga finished 9th in last season's championship. For the start of the 2010-2011 season, the team has managed to move into the top of the board and now leads the championship. This past weekend the team kept on with their unexpected performance with a 2-1 upset against the Bundesliga defending champions: Bayern Munich.

The game was been played at the Allianz Arena, the home field for the German champions. Despite finishing the game with the victory, Mainz didn't strike the local fans as a very strong team. On the contrary, the Die Nullfnfer were very close to break its 5 consecutive winning game streak against Bayern Munich. Truth be said, Munich was a bit superior during most part of the game.

The sixth round of the German Bundesliga was the scenario for Mainz to keep on top of the league in a game in which it was luck and not their good performance that gave them the win.

Bayern Munich had the possession of the ball for the most part but played with excessive confidence and took too much for granted. This was decisive in the outcome, as the Bavarians were unable to complete to the opportunities they had to score.

Bayern Munich advanced with the ball in its possession, but the lack of organization in their offensive end prevented them from opening the score.

The first fifteen minutes of the game were controlled by the Munich. The visitors took advantage of the distractions of the rivals to steal the ball and move into the area.

Mainz, in the midst of a local defensive error, took the ball in its possession and went to search for a goal. Midfielder Lewis Holtby was responsible for directing the activities of the visitors. Holtby shook off defender Daniel van Buyten to send the ball to his teammate Sami Allagui, who beat defender Philipp Lahm to send the ball to the back of the net of Hans-Jrg Butt.

The fans were booing the irregular performance by the local team. Towards the end of the first part, Munich improved its game and managed to tie the score. By mistake, defender Bo Svensson scored into his own goal after 45 minutes of action.

For the second part both teams were not able to create plays that could endanger the opposing goal.

Mainz moved down the field easily, but trying to give a good show. Bayern Munich could not show all the power that was to be crowned champions last season.

The ball went from one side to another, but there was little football to satisfy a crowd that was eager for more and better plays.

The match followed a similar rhythm towards the end. It was not until the 77th minute that Mainz's striker, dm Szalai, took swerved past the local defense to score the second goal for his team. With this victory, Mainz scored three points and remains at the top of the Bundesliga with a record of 18 points and no losses so far.
