How is your drinking water? Do you feel that it's really safe to drink? Many people don't. Other than requesting more information about your local water purification system from the Environment Protection Agency, you can also find out more about reverse osmosis water filters. Many people wonder if these filters actually work, so here are a few things that you should consider before you purchase one.

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems are purification systems in which water is pressurized and passed through a thin membrane. The membrane is semi-permeable, and strips the water of a number of contaminants and impurities. Reverse osmosis was originally used in the 1950s for the purpose of removing salt from sea water. Bottled water companies also use reverse osmosis water filters to take out the pollutants and microorganisms that cause sickness. This the main selling point for most bottled water companies.

Instead of paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars every year on bottled water, I would highly recommend that you invest in a good ro (reverse osmosis) water filtration system. The most simple models are installed on the faucet of your kitchen sink. A number of filters come with the system in order to take out silt and sediments that are found in tap water. There is also the reverse osmosis membrane to remove the smaller harmful contaminants from the water, and a carbon filter that give the water a final cleaning before it comes through the faucet.

The main drawback to reverse osmosis water filters is the cost. Generally, it takes about four gallons of water to purify one gallon.Additionally, some scientists argue that removing the beneficial minerals such as flouride, calcium, and magnesium (all commonly found in tap water) makes purified water less healthy than tap water.

Before investing in a home filtration system, I recommend first getting a detailed report about your local drinking water. Some localities periodically send this information out, so don't throw away mail from the state! You should also find out how much water you'll be using to purify the water in your home so that you can continue to save water and conserve the natural resources in the environment. If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters (especially hurricanes) a water filtration system will definitely be beneficial. If this is you, go the extra step and get a private water testing. Even though this process is very expensive (and a little tedious), it may give you the information that you need in order to make sure your water is as safe as possible for you and your loved one.
