Get More Zzzs To Improve Your Memory
If you are having more difficulty with your memory than you would like
, the problem could be attributed to the amount of sleep that you receive. There is a definitive link between your memory and sleep. If you do not receive a sufficient amount of quality rest, your memory can be affected. Why exactly is this?
Your brain works to organize what it has learned throughout the day while you sleep at night. One memory study which was published in the journal Nature in 2006 concluded that sleep makes a strong contribution to the consolidation of long-term memories.
Unfortunately, today most people think that just skipping a few hours sleep here and there will have no major impact on them. That is not the case at all. Another study found that even missing just a few hours of sleep can have the same negative impact on your memory as getting no sleep. Therefore, if you are interested in improving your memory, it is critical to ensure that you get a proper amount of quality sleep each and every night.
When you get a poor night of sleep, your memory is severely impacted in two different ways. First, lack of sleep affects your concentration. It can be quite difficult to focus clearly, which makes it difficult to remember. Second, when you are sleepy, it makes it almost impossible for whatever you learned the prior day to be recorded within your brain.
So, what can you do to improve your ability to get a good night of quality sleep and remember better? First, make sure you cut out the caffeine at night and consider cutting back on caffeinated beverages during the day. More than two cups of coffee or the same amount of soda can affect your ability to sleep. Second, make sure your bedroom is dark enough. If there is too much light in your room, it can affect your brain's ability to register the need to sleep. A sleep mask may be a good idea to help block out extraneous light.
Remember your bedroom is a place of sleep. Far too many households nowadays have TVs and laptops as part of the furniture of the bedroom. Whilst you may think that these devices are harmless, they can actually have a profound effect on your sleep.
Late night snacks and meals can also be detrimental to your sleeping pattern. Endeavour to have your last meal at least three hours before retiring to bed. During the night your body works intensively to break down your food and turn it into energy. Therefore the more dense the composite, the more energy your body will require to break down these foods. This is why many people who eat late at night wake in morning feeling exhausted, despite having a full eight hours of sleep. If you must have something to eat late at night, make it a salad or ideally a fruit juice/smoothie. These foods are ideal and the body breaks down these foods with consummate ease.
Finally, if you notice that you are tossing and turning a lot at night, it may be time to replace your mattress. This is an excellent investment in your overall health as it can help to eliminate body aches and pains while also helping you to sleep better and ultimately improve your memory.
