Get Off the Blood Sugar Roller Coaster and onto A Healthy Eating Plan

Ever wonder why you had cravings or were always hungry while you were on the "healthy

eating plan" someone convinced you to try? It probably wasn't your body getting used to the good food. The "healthy" food you may have been eating on that plan might have caused your blood sugar to fluctuate.

Understanding blood sugar and how different foods affect it is essential to a proper healthy diet plan. If you eat the wrong foods, it can send you on a blood sugar thrill ride that's anything but thrilling.

Eat the right foods, however, and you can lose weight and feel more satisfied without the constant cravings. Now isn't that good news?

Why Is Blood Sugar Important to a Healthy Eating Plan?

When you eat, your body converts food into sugar that it uses for energy. Some foods, however, cause your blood sugar to rise too high too quickly. High blood sugar is a dangerous condition for your body. This is one reason why diabetes is such a problem.

In a normally functioning body, high blood sugar will cause the body to release insulin. Insulin is a hormone that tells the body to store fat and brings blood sugar down. However, too much insulin can cause your blood sugar to go down too much.

Low blood sugar equals hunger and cravings as your body asks for the energy it needs to function. Eat the wrong foods, and the thrill ride starts all over again.

What do you get as a result? More fat, constant cravings, and hunger.

If you want to lose fat and stay satisfied, you have to eat the right foods that help to keep blood sugar within their proper levels. The tricky part is that some foods you may think are healthy, aren't.

Foods that Cause Blood Sugar to Spike

Orange juice is healthy, right? How about that low fat cereal? Muffins? Whole grain bread or pasta? All those foods can cause your blood sugar to soar.

This is why it is important to know which foods really are good for you. Most people eat the foods on the above list every day and wonder why they can't lose weight.

Other foods that are blood sugar enemies are processed foods, donuts, cakes, crackers, and . . . sugar. Whenever you see sugar or its aliases run the other way. You'll have to be careful, though. Many times, you may not know you are eating tons of sugar.

Look on the ingredients list of any food you pick up . . . or better yet, bypass the boxed food and get healthy, organic food. Do this, and you will be sure not to get any processed junk hidden in a healthy looking package.

What Foods Promote Proper Blood Sugar Levels and Help Me Lose Weight?

So what foods are available that help you lose weight and help maintain blood sugar at an appropriate level? There are plenty.

Fruits and vegetables can be eaten in abundance on a healthy eating plan. Now before you turn up your nose, know that there are a variety of different fruits and vegetables out there. Your supermarket may have several that you have never tasted before. If you don't like one, try another.

There are also several grains, nuts, starches, and other foods that you can have. Quinoa, sweet potatoes, rice, beans, pecans, and almonds are just a few examples.

Let's not forget the meat: fish, pork, beef, chicken, shrimp, crab . . . is your mouth watering?

And, of course, there is the fat. Yes, the right fat is good for you and can help you lose weight. Butter, coconut oil, and olive oil are some good examples of healthy fat.

Don't sabotage your healthy eating plan by sending your body on a blood sugar ride. Eat the proper foods in the right proportions, and you can put together a healthy eating plan that can help you get the body you've always wanted.
