Minoxidil, also known as Mintop or Avacor or Rogaine or Regaine is a medication which

helps in retarding or stopping hair loss and encouraging hair growth or regrowth. You can get it at shops where you get other products for treatment of baldness. Usually, the effects of the treatment with Minoxidil disappear once you stop with the treatment. Let us see how does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil is mainly used for central balding only. It is comparatively less effective when the area of hair loss is large. Its effects are also seen mostly in younger men. The way it works is that it is considered to be a potassium channel opener which causes hyperpolarization of cell membranes. Although, its working is not completely understood, it is still considered pretty effective.

By making the blood vessels wide and opening potassium channels, minoxidil allows more oxygen, nutrient and blood to the follicle. This usually leads to shedding of follicle and replacing them by thick new hair. This is basically how minoxidil works.

There are some side effects of this as well like dandruff, swelling of face, rapid and irregular heartbeat and lightheadedness. Shedding or hair loss due to minoxidil is also a reported problem because of using it, ironically.

This does show that minoxidil is affecting hair follicles but there is no guarantee that shedding will be replaced by hair growth or not. Minoxidil is highly toxic and hence can prove harmful and especially if you have cats at home, it is harmful for them even causing their death.

For best effects, this needs to be kept in contact with the scalp for at least 4 hours before washing it off. This gives better results. Minoxidil comes with many brand names and it is mostly the same with every brand but just some slight variations in its ingredients. Usually, you need to apply it regularly, that is, once or twice everyday so that the growth is maintained. If that is not done, the growth will decrease and it will not have the proper effect.

So, this is how minoxidil works. You need to really use it carefully to get the right output. It is a very old form of treatment but has its downsides too. Going bald for men has been a problem of concern since long. Minoxidil can help you to a great extent if used properly and regularly. Try it and you will see the changes yourself. Remember to use it regularly.
