These games come around. Ys I and II are a few old-school role-playing greats, two games that first came on stage more than 20 years ago and has since been ported to nearly every possible platform. Nintendo consoles, Sega systems, home computers - you name it.
That long history of remaking and re-recreate the same experiences have given us some good versions of them over the years, but unfortunately it is bad news for the recent reissue on PSP. Ys I & II Chronicles has a killer new soundtrack and some relatively new art, but the beautiful painting is still just feels old.

The Ys series (pronounced "Geese" without G) tells the story of the energetic and ambitious haired swordsman Adol Christin, and his ongoing quest to ram himself face down every villainous monster, he sees. Seriously - it's the signature gameplay mechanic in these first two series games. You have no attack button. Swing your sword is not attached to a timer. Simply line up Adol with an enemy and charge straight into them with repeated, relentless and ridiculous body slams.
It is a unique and initially somewhat repulsive combat system - as almost every other video game did you always avoid making direct contact with the enemy, and here it is quite necessary. You are not invincible in those clashes. Enemies can still hurt you. So it's about your approach - if you hit them directly with the principal, your HP bar take a hit. If you touch them off-center, side or rear itself, you earn clean strikes against them without any negative consequence for you.
It all ends up entrusted to you, as Adol running in mad circles around the blind enemies and ramming them again and again until they explode - literally - into a mass of mutilated flesh and bones, as comical yesterday rained out over the landscape. Adol speed is also extremely fast - so fast that it again is something repugnant in the first place.
It's definitely a different gameplay. And still unique, even after 20 years because no other games outside the Ys series has ever been too eager to borrow this style of game. Here is how works. Adol's too fast standard speed and the fact that you do not need to do anything more complicated than touching your enemies to hurt them are intentional design choice intended to make Ys I & II play at a constant pace. And the pace of benefit from it - it's certainly fast and it can be addictive.
But the design sacrifices depth for speed, as Adol enemies are all blind and has no attack patterns other than just walking around. And quickened pace hit a wall every time you get too hurt and have to run back to a safe haven for healing.
Or every time you run into another problem, since the adventure's many utterly pointless line-based obstacles. XSEED happily spins these tempo-blocking stumbling points as "wonderfully obtuse", presents them as respects examples of the modern product celebrates the games' most old-school original versions. It's a nice way to say you will get frustrated when you play - since the truth is that you just get totally stuck in quest of more than one occasion and have no good idea what to do next.
As an example, the Ys I's largest dungeon, the Darmer Tower, a catty hall, directly derived from all of your health when you step inside the walls. The only way to turn off the instant-death effect is to find a hammer, then go back for a second, independent former part of the dungeon to find a particular stone column out of dozens of similar appearance to them and smash a hole into it. What? Exactly. It's the kind of senseless stop being completely normal over 20 years ago, but in a "modern" product feels very out of place and just confusing.
Ys II, thankfully, are a bit more straightforward and easy to find out, but Ys I would be almost impossible without help from some FAQ, guide or walkthrough - and that's ultimately what this "new" collection boils down to. It feels old.
And as it turns out, is it - this Chronicles release is not actually newly developed just for PSP but is actually an adaptation of an earlier remake of Ys I & II from 2001. The sprite art still looks pretty smooth, and it is completely at home on the PSP screen. And the music is completely new, with each track having a fresh and energetic 2011 remix (and you can even replace the entire soundtrack for either 2001 or original 1987 versions of the same songs at any time during the adventure, which is a nice touch).
But the central elements of the game - where you go, whatever you do and the conversations you have - does not seem to be 2011 caliber than a handful of amusing recent pop culture references, the latest porting team decided to throw into the script.And after all the other versions of these same games have had over the years, it is unfortunate that the PSP version did not get a little more modern efforts.

Ys I & II Chronicles on PSP is a 20-year game design with a 10-year-old coat of paint on it, ended with the brilliance of an entirely new soundtrack. Only consider it if you know you're in the mood for a deliberately dull, old-school trip that will have you searching for an online guide in the first five minutes - or if you just really want to see a man beat hisenemies by slamming right into them with his face.
