The institute of motorists are urging drivers to make sure their tyres are in good order before the cold weather really sets in. Surface water from excess rain, snow and ice can turn the roads into really unsafe skid pans, and we need to prepare ourselves before the weather really turns. Although it seems much more, a tyre only has the area od the surface of a shoe in touch with the road at any one time, so it's a bit of an obvious idea that we need to keep them in really good working order at all times. With the councils cutting finances for roads and therefore the surfaces being in poor condition, we need to be extra vigilant.

Peter Rodger, IAM Chief Examiner, said: "Under-inflation causes excessive tyre-wear, with every ten per cent under the recommended optimum decreasing tyre life by ten percent.

"Vehicles of drivers found to be at fault in high-speed accidents were found to be six times more likely to have worn tyres than those of the other drivers involved*. Keeping your tyres maintained is an important part of car-care, not only for safety but also for fuel-economy; under-inflated tyres will increase fuel consumption."

Make sure that you have checked for cuts in the tyres that may blow out when you are driving, and when the tyres are cold make sure they are inflated correctly.
