But where do you volunteer? Where could you find these opportunities?

Small companies usually take on volunteers. You can even try startup companies. Non-profits, meanwhile, usually have a steady need for volunteer work. These are ideal places to apply. Don't even entertain the idea of volunteering for big companies because believe it or not they do not look at you as free labor, but as someone they have to babysit. You are an unnecessary responsibility. Getting in big companies as a volunteer has a slim success rate.

On the contrary, small companies are often overloaded with work. Work not done ends up in a to-do pile creating a backlog. Also keep in mind that most businesses are still recovering from the economic recession. There is a higher probability for such companies to take on volunteer work. If you prove yourself indispensable as a volunteer you might just land the first job opening that the company will have.

It is the same with startup companies who are constantly looking for volunteers and interns to add to their manpower. But if you are looking to get eventual employment, a start up may not be a good fit as financial stability may be a concern.

Meanwhile, non-profit organizations are always hiring volunteers. Second to small companies, this is a recommended channel to get unpaid job experience. Most non-profits may even customize opportunities so you get a chance to work with them.

So how do you work your way to employment from a volunteer position? Show your value to the company by being a self-starter. Show that you do not need as much baby sitting by being self-directed. At the same time know your place and do not enter a company as a "know it all." Prove that you have good work ethics by being reliable. In other words, treat it like a paid job. Work hard, take the extra mile and dress appropriately. Also, don't forget to build your network, and make new contacts. Your volunteer job may not have an opening right now, but the company down the street does. So network continuously. Through it you can get a job fast.
