Getting A Dental Implant

At some point during life, you may receive the bad news that you need a dental implant

. This may be a very disappointing as it means that you are losing your teeth.

However, a dental implant can help you be able to continue to eat and has visual benefits as well. A dental implant is generally made out of a titanium cylinder.

This cylinder is implanted into the jaw. The idea is that this cylinder will act as a tooth root and provide stability to which a fake tooth or dental crown can be attached to the top of the cylinder.

A retention device can also be attached to the cylinder. There is relatively little risk involved with the installment of a dental implant.

In fact, statistics show that there is at least a 95 percent chance that the dental implant will be successfully installed and integrated in the bone of the jaw as well as function properly. However, there is a five percent chance that the dental implant will not integrate itself properly.

If this occurs, the implant will be loose in the bone. This means that the implant will need to be removed properly.

However, if you are willing to try again, you will have the same chance of your second implant being successful. Keep in mind that if you have diabetes your procedures will have a much more likely chance of facing complications.

In addition, those who use tobacco, smoke or receive radiation treatment in the jaw may also face complications to this procedure. Be sure to ask your dentist if there is anything you can do to eliminate as much risk as possible.

If there are no complications with pulling out your real tooth, the dental implant can be installed on the same appointment much of the time. The most likely complication you may face if you do not have any of the previous habits or illnesses that complicate the procedure would be an infect tooth.

If the tooth was infected, it will need to be treated before the implant can be installed. It is best to be able to put the implant in on the same day as the tooth is removed because it takes much less time.

In addition, it is less painful to only have to heal once. If the implant cannot be installed the same day the tooth is removed, you will need to let your mouth heal for at least two or three months.

Sometimes the bone has faced a disease of some sort. If this is the case there may not be enough bone left to anchor the implant.

When this occurs, a bone grafting will be required in order to replace the bone. Sometimes the bone grafting and installment of the implant can occur at the same time.

After a successful installment, the area will need to heal for three to four months. After this time period, the new tooth or retention device can be attached.

The implant will not be firm enough to support the new tooth or retention device before the three to four months is over. When it is time to attach the new tooth or retention device, an abutment will be placed on the end of the implant.

This abutment will stick out above the gum tissue. It provides the necessary stage to attach the crown or other device.

The devices that are used in a visible area of the mouth are slightly different from those used in non-visible parts of the mouth. In general, the devices needed for the visible parts of the mouth are custom designed and slightly more expensive that the non-visible parts of the mouth.

If you desire custom abutments and temporary crowns, your dentist will take an impression during the initial healing period. These custom, but temporary devices will be placed at the end of the healing period and function until the permanent dental devices are completed and you are ready to have them installed.

The dental implant should last the rest of your lifetime once it is installed properly. However, it is similar to a normal tooth in many respects and it can still be lost in many different ways.

For example, bone loss due to infection would remove the anchor and then the implant would become loose and fall out. Be sure to visit your dentist regularly to make sure it and the rest of your teeth are in working condition.
