Getting A Good Nights Sleep When Camping
You will very often hear people say that they love camping out under the stars but for the fact that they would miss their creature comforts
. Their biggest objection is being uncomfortable and not getting a restful nights sleep. These are usually people who have had a camping experience many years before; perhaps when they were teenagers, and remember only too clearly how hard a tent floor can feel after a few hours of tossing and turning.
A Painful, Inconvenient History:
There used to be just three alternatives for beds inside a camping tent. First there was the metal camp bed. Ideal if you have a very large frame tent but not much good if you are camping even a few yards away from your car or if your tent is small.
Next, there were the blow-up mattresses. These, again, were heavy but at least took up less space when deflated. They took ages to inflate by blowing in to them so a pump would need to be packed and, more often than not, they would start to deflate in the night meaning you had to get up and re-inflate or suffer on until morning.
Finally there were the thin foam mats the favoured camping gear by hikers which were relatively lightweight and rolled up to easily attach to a backpack. The only problem with these foam mats is that they are not really comfortable for a whole night. So the camping comfort wimps may have had a point. Until recently, that is.
Now, Comfort is an Option!
The ideal camp bed has now arrived. Lightweight, easy to carry and yet comfortable and durable, this modern mattress has the best of both worlds. The self-inflating camping mattress has become a big hit with hikers and campers alike. This technology was developed by two former Boeing engineers who started a backpacking equipment company called Cascade Designs.
The mattress is a self inflating pad which is constructed of open cell foam inside a durable outer skin. The foam has excellent memory qualities and, when the air vents are open and the mattress is unrolled, the foam returns to its natural state pulling in air. When that is done, the air vents are closed and the mattress remains inflated. To deflate, simply open the vents and roll it up.
Not only are these types of mattresses extremely comfortable compared with normal foam pads, they also pack down a lot smaller and are extremely light the average self-inflating mattress weighs around 700g.
Comfort at a Reasonable Price:
Since the patents expired on the original design, there are many manufacturers offing this type of mattress and the price has dropped significantly. Whereas previously a self-inflating mattress was a premium item, these days you can pick up a high quality one for between $50 and $100.
So, this provides one less excuse for people not to enjoy camping out!
