Getting A Job Out Of College

Being a college grad job seeker, especially during an economic downturn

, can be difficult. The competition for advertised job listings is often too great. By following the crowd and applying only for jobs everyone else has is a common mistake made by job seekers. If you want to find employment with little or no competition, then you will definitely benefit in finding unadvertised jobs during your job hunt. Employers with job openings often times prefer not to advertise or list them with employment agencies. Rather, employers prefer asking other people, such as current employees to recommend someone.

The real secret to finding a job is to get the ones that have a smaller pool of competition to deal with, which can be done with unadvertised job openings. There are quite a few employers with job openings that are not listed with agencies, instead opting to hire from the inside, or get personal recommendations from people.

You can find a couple of variants of hidden jobs:

1. First, you can find job openings that are set by the employer. To begin with, you have to pick a field that you want to get into, as well as have the necessary expertise and passion for. After that, do some research by hitting the nearest library and looking for 25 or more companies that fit that description, using employer directories such as the Million Dollar Directory from Dun and Bradstreet, or the Register of Corporations from Standard and Poor. You can also get help from the DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles) and OOH (Occupational Outlook Handbook) in order to find the jobs that you would like, and what you have to have to qualify for them. You can even get an idea of how much they pay from the OOH.

After that, research a bit more by talking to people who are already working in the field you wish to get a job in, so you have a better idea of what the job entails. If you know anyone in these fields, try to get referrals and contacts that could lead you to a job. Get in direct contact with personnel in charge of hiring and let them know what you are interested in. Inform them ways in which you might help their company achieve their goals. You could even get more contacts by attending professional associations that have to do with your preferred field.

2. Secondly, you could make your own job for a company - this means that the position does not exist, but you could suggest it to a potential employer. This way, the competition is nil, and you have a say in how much you make. Go to your companies of interest and give them a proposal, either in writing or in person. You can use the research you received from the interviews to help you determine what you need to show them, as well as what could be required by each individual company, but is not provided by a position. In this proposal, be sure to tell them the salary you propose, as well as what you plan on doing for the company. If you are proactive enough, you are sure to get a fantastic job that you are happy doing.
