Getting A Promise Ring
Why are promise rings so special and what do they stand for
? They are also called purity, abstinence, and chastity rings.
They started in the United States in the early 1990's and have since grown very popular among many Christian affiliated teenage groups. Groups advocating sexual abstinence thought that having a physical reminder not to engage in sexual activity for teens would be a good idea and that they would enjoy wearing jewelry.
Usually, the teenager takes some sort of a religious vow to practice abstinence until they get married and will wear the ring until that time comes for them. When Bush was in office, there were a few organizations that promoted chastity and had teens sign virginity pledges and wear them.
Some of these kinds of groups received federal grants. Like the Silver Ring Thing which is part of the Pennsylvania Evangelical Church who has received more than one million dollars from the federal government to help promote this cause. Of course the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU) decided that there was not enough of a separation between church and state and that the group should not receive any money from the government.
The American Civil Liberties Union should be declared ineligible to receive any more funds because of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment talks about how there is no law that can be made which disrespects any particular establishment of religion.
This includes interfering with the free exercise of religion, the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. Back in the year 1925, the Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment applies to each state and any local government.
Previously, the law had only applied to Congress but this had changed with the case of Gitlow versus New York. In this case, they were looking to extend the provisions of the First Amendment to local governing bodies.
Back in the year 1833, the Supreme Court had previously ruled that the Constitution's Bill of Rights only applied to the federal government and so the federal courts could not stop any enforcement of state laws that restricted those rights. They overturned this decision in the Gitlow versus New York case which now made it a crime to advocate the duty, need, or appropriateness of overthrowing them by any force or violence.
Because of the American Civil Liberties Union involvement with these groups that encourage chastity and purity among all teenagers and young adults who are not yet married, any time the group does anything with the money, they have to report every single action to the American Civil Liberties Union. All of their transactions must be closely monitored to make sure that they have a separation of church and state.
Sometimes the line between church and state can get a little bit blurry like in this situation where you have various church groups who just want to encourage abstinence. In public school systems, they had set up sexual education classes that everyone must take.
Some students are excused from these classes only if their parents or guardians sign a note saying that they do not want their children to attend any of these types of classes. But the majority of children begin attending these sexual education and maturation classes when they are in sixth grade.
These types of classes last all the way up until the child is in high school around the tenth grade. Throughout the program, they teach about how the human body changes and matures in both boys and girls.
They also teach how about intercourse and preventions to getting pregnant. They used to try and teach abstinence a lot more than they do now but most of these educators feel like it is a waste of time because most teens will end up having intercourse before they are married anyway.
So they teach preventative measures to getting pregnant instead of fighting to stay chaste. You still see purity rings around but usually they are tied to certain church groups and are not as public as some wish.
