Getting Into "The Zone"
There is nothing worse than getting into a panic or crisis mindset when there are urgent tasks to complete
. When we panic we cease to function efficiently and often shut down completely, multiplying our stress and doing nothing to alleviate the problems we face.
In contrast to times of crisis are times when you are in 'the zone' and everything is easy and effortless and goes your way. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to remain in that state of flow all of the time - all aspects of your personal and professional life would be a breeze!
So what's the secret to getting into and maintaining a state of flow?
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi wrote a book called FLOW that addresses this mindset and suggests that you can take the following active steps to elevate yourself to a state of 'flow':
1. Make sure that in whatever activity you are undertaking, the skill matches the challenge ie if the challenge is too big and your skills aren't up to it, you are likely to experience anxiety and hence reduce your performance. Conversely if there is no challenge, because your skills are way beyond the task - boredom will kick in.
2. The activity must be attached to a goal. This means that the activity must assist in moving you closer to achieving a specific, pre-defined goal.
3. There must be rules or guidelines around your activity. This will help to keep you focused and reduce distractions.
4. Finally you must have a reference framework or a feedback loop so you can check to ensure that you are on the right track.
So now that you know how to access flow when you want, consider where in your personal or professional life would you like to spend more time in "the zone"?
Think about times in your professional and personal life when you have been very successful - on reflection how did you meet the criteria above?
Then think about circumstances where you have felt challenged in the past or are currently experiencing challenge. More likely than not, at least one of the four criteria above was not met.
Set yourself a challenge to get into flow in a specific area of your personal or professional life in which you are currently being challenged. Review points 1 - 4 above to determine which one or more are missing then re-align and have another go at it - then enjoy the experience of being in "the zone" and watching your results improve for the better!
