Presence of long chains of silicon and oxygen is a common feature to all the six types of asbestos but they differ in physical and chemical properties in relation to other substances they contain like calcium, magnesium or iron.

Properties of asbestos

Asbestos has certain properties with which it is qualified. These properties are what mark it out for good industrial uses and they include;

* Resistance to fire

Asbestos is non-flammable and non-combustible. It has a high melting point and can withstand intense heat.

* Good for insulation

It is confirmed that one of the remarkable properties of asbestos is its ability to give a superb insulation. The fibers contain air pockets that are impervious to heat, cold, electricity and noise.

* Gives good friction

Asbestos provide good friction which is the reason it comes in handy in the manufacturing of brake pad and clutches.

Common uses of asbestos

There are several uses that asbestos is put to. One of them is in the cement industry. Asbestos is mixed with cement to produce such asbestos-cement products like floor tiles. A use for asbestos is also found in ships' engines to auto parts for army jeeps as well as torpedoes and bazooka shells. Because of its durability, tensile strength and fire retarding ability, Structural Engineers have incorporated asbestos in their building plans and put it to good use especially in the construction of high rise buildings.
