Getting Ready For Your Driving Test

You can take your driving test in an instructors car or your own whichever you feel most comfortable with, either way the day will go the same.

The test examiner will ask you to provide your documents namely your driving license and your theory test pass certificate.

You must then sign a declaration form that the vehicle is insured for you to use whilst taking the driving test. Obviously this will not be a problem if you are using an Instructors car but if the vehicle is your own ensure you are insured.

You will be asked to lead the way out to your car. You may ask for your driving instructor to accompany you if you wish.

You will be asked to read a registration plate on a vehicle which will be roughly 20 meters away. If you fail to be able to read the number plate then the distance will be measured and you will be asked again. If you still cannot read the number you will have failed and will have to take an eye test.

You will be asked two "Show me - Tell me" questions. Once you have answered these correctly the examiner will tell you to take a seat behind the wheel in the vehicle and get as comfortable as possible. Meanwhile the examiner will take note of the car registration and check that the vehicle is roadworthy.

Once the examiner gets into the vehicle they will be able to explain what will be expected of you to pass the test. Always just follow the road straight unless told otherwise, the examiner will tell you when they want you to turn left or right.

If at any time you do not understand any given command from the examiner then just ask them to repeat themselves. The test itself lasts around forty minutes and will include urban, main and back roads. You may also be asked to drive on dual carriageways where the national speed limit is seventy miles per hour.

You will be asked to perform two of the following manouevers.

Turn in the road,Reverse into a limited opening on the left/right, Reverse Park, either in a car park into a parking bay or on the road behind a parked vehicle. There is approximately a one in four chance of having to perform an emergency stop. This is not compulsory on every driving test.

At several points during the driving test, you will be asked to park in a safe place and then simply pull away again, sometimes this will be from the top of a hill or behind an obstruction.

At the end of the driving test, the driving test examiner will ask you to switch off the engine and will then inform you as to your success or failure. Whether you fail or pass you will be asked if you would like any explanations on your driving faults, that is of course if you have any.
