Getting Students Involved in the Community

Using school assembly programs to teach students to be actively involved in their community as part of their social studies curriculum is vitally important. The community as a whole plays a large role in the upkeep and running of a school as well as contributing to fund raisers and donating much needed materials for school repairs.

A school assembly can provide a perfect opportunity for teachers and parents to encourage students to involve themselves in community projects. The students can be asked to carefully select a community project that the school can participate in and present their cause at the school assembly. The school can then vote as to the best community project that was presented. By doing this, it ensures the whole school is involved.

The school assembly program can then be designed to incorporate the activities and fund raising needed for the community projects. Students can spend time requesting businesses in the area to donate goods and services, which will get the community project off the ground.

Organizing fun and exciting fund raisers during school assemblies can also be a much needed source of funds to ensure that community project does not run dry before its completion. Cake sales, hot dog sales and tickets to an exciting adventure sports event are all ideas that can be used to raise the funds. During the fund raiser, students can also spend time educating the community on why the community project is so vitally important and what they plan to achieve in the long run.

Bringing the community, students, teachers and parents together to work on a combined community project during school assemblies will go a long way to giving the students not only experience but also educating them on the importance of working with the community.
