A Few Reasons Why Students Fall Behind In Class

Have you ever been in a class and found yourself day dreaming, falling asleep, doodling or just plain confused?

Do you remember what caused you to do those things when you should have been paying attention?

The majority of students who have ever been in the situations listed above have experienced at least one of the following reasons:

Teacher is not engaging - In simpler terms, the teacher is just plain boring!! There are some teachers that lack the skills or experience to engage students. Whether it is the monotony in their voice or the laughing at their own jokes issue, these teachers just don't make the cut. They lack the ability to get down to the student's level and/or relate to them. The key is for teachers to find a way to draw the students into the subject by making the class interactive, providing real-world examples that students can relate to or(depending on the age group) play games that bring about competition.

The subject is too abstract - Let's be honest, there are many subjects that are just plain difficult to break down into a language people understand (ex. certain Math subjects). However, the skill is in breaking the subject down to the core and making sure that everyone understands the basic fundamentals of the subject before moving on to the more difficult problems/examples.

Learning Disabilities - Although, this is a sensitive issue it is a problem that must be addressed. Some students do poorly do to learning disabilities that go undiagnosed (dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, to name a few). The quicker the parent, teacher or loved one catches the problem then the quicker it is to get help. Early diagnosis will help your child's performance immensely in school.
