Getting The Goods From Here To There

I read somewhere that E-bay alone sells almost a million items a day; collectibles

, appliances, computers, furnishings, equipment, toys, clothes, vehicles, virtually anything. With those kinds of figures shipping franchises and discount shipping have to making a haul, not to mention the established ones like FEDEX, DHL franchises and the US Postal service.

Ebay had a funny beginning. It was started by a French born, Iranian, Pierre Omidyar. The first item bought was a broken laser pointer for $14.83. Mr. Omidyar was shocked and e-mailed the winner to see if he understood that the pointer was broken. He was assured that the bidder did know it was broken and had a collection of broken laser pointers. This started a chain of events that is know by virtually every person world wide.

In 2008 when Ebay went worldwide they had literally hundreds of millions of registered users with 15,000+ plus employees and yearly revenues of nearly $7.7 billion dollars. We all have closets full of stuff we don't use and we all want stuff we don't have. When our kids grew up a little I went on E-bay and bought the pieces to all their Fisher Price sets that they had lost over the years. I bought cannon balls for their pirate ships, new nets and pirates, I bought lost pieces of their Little People Fisher Price sets, kings, queens, camper ladders, mail boxes to make the all complete before I stored them away for our grandchildren.

I do buy on Ebay occassionally these days, but I have found Amazon to be a great place for books and movies. Their shipping cost are usually less than Ebay and are so efficient. I can order a book on Monday and it is often at my door by Wednesday or Thursday. Especially if I buy directly from Amazon and not from one of their clients virtual stores. I love to look and see what is available. I always keep my wish list up-to-date, and my favorite Amazon feature is no shipping is you spend $25.00. That keeps me coming back or more!

All this buying and selling is supplying endless opportunities for shipping franchises, discount shipping and it should be helping the US Postal Service, you would think, but that is fodder for another day and another article. With all these amazing items to buy and sell on Ebay, Amazon, Overstock.com, and the endless supply of online shopping, shipping is the franchise of the future I would think. I haven't taken our boys into a clothing store in years. We do all our clothing shopping from our computer, I love it, they love it. Truly, millions and millions of pieces are packaged and shipped daily.
