A seasonal allergy usually arises with the symptoms of runny nose, headache, cough, and watery eyes. This is not serious, and these symptoms can be treated easily. There are many medications which are available with and without prescriptions.

Aside from taking medication, there are other things an allergist can do to help their patient. They can have skin and blood testing done so that the exact culprits causing the allergy are known. Avoidance of these substances will cause less stress to the patient. Things such as pollen and foods like nuts and shellfish may cause allergies in people.

The first type of drug used is an antihistamine. These may cause drowsiness in people, but there are other forms to reduce the amount of sedation such as non-drowsy formulas. These can be bought without a prescription at the local drug store, and they will do their job to relieve runny noses, itchy eyes, and coughing. However, the best thing to do is to get at the root of the cause and to avoid irritants as much as possible.

The next thing that can be tried are nasal steroids. There are also alpha-adrenergic decongestants which can be given if steroids or antihistamines are not working. These will be prescribed by a doctor.

Anaphylactic reactions are severe allergic reactions. Symptoms may include hives, swelling, and narrowing of the airway. The obstruction of the airway is an immediate emergency. These problems usually arise when there has been an exposure to an irritant like a bee sting or eating shellfish. If the reaction is on the mild side, the person should have an epinephrine injection. They should administer it at the time of the first reaction because something more severe can arise.

The medications that are used at the hospital are not needed to be noted here, but it is important that the person be aware that they know that a severe allergic reaction is occurring. A doctor should prescribe this epinephrine to all of their patients who have these problems.

Allergies are very common, and there are many ways to treat them depending on the type of allergy. Antihistamines will solve the problem of the common symptoms. However, some people have anaphylactic-type reactions which might need more urgent care, and there are other medications to help reduce the swelling and inflammation occurring in this type of reaction. The most important thing a person needs is the epinephrine injection to use at the time of the exposure.
