Traveling should be a fun and exciting part of a group trip! The camaraderie
, shared experiences and opportunities to catch-up on both social and professional fronts are just a few of the pleasures of traveling. That's what a group trip should be. Ah, but so often, it isn't. All too often it's expensive, it's rushed, it's stressful, it's uncomfortable, and it ends-up being something totally not enjoyable and an experience you wish you could forget.
Take Air Travel; unless you are paying an arm and a leg for first class accommodations so you have room to stretch your arms and legs, airplanes have become the cattle cars of the skies. They are crowded, cramped, and unbelievably uncomfortable. And quite often, before you get to fly the unfriendly skies, there are flight cancellations and delays that can leave you terminally stranded in some distant terminal. If this is a group trip... good luck sitting near each other. Oh, and the scenery is a long, long way down... and often under cloud cover. When you do arrive at your destination, you STILL have to arrange for ground transportation to get you to where you're staying and the things you want to see. Unless you absolutely need to take a plane, air travel should be left strictly to the birds.
So let's get down to earth and consider ground travel. You could take the family car, but wait, if it's a trip with your church group or a club, then it won't be one car, it will be a LOT of cars. Managing and directing a group of people traveling in a convoy of cars may be a bit easier than herding a cluster of cats through a field of catnip... a little easier, but not a lot. And again, riding in a car can be a cramped and exhausting experience. There is only one advantage of a car; it WILL take you exactly where you want to go, or at least to the parking space nearest to where you want to go, but only if you are good at reading maps while driving and arguing with your spouse about who was right when it came to that last right which should really have been a left.
The next option to consider is train travel. It's romantic, nostalgic, usually affordable, and generally not too cramped or crowded. You can walk around and stretch your legs, find a snack, and definitely see the scenery go by. We're getting warmer here. Ah, but what if we all wanted to meet up in the club car? There won't be enough seats. And, for heaven sake, why does that tiny child covered in fruit juice stains keep running up and down the aisle making that horrible screaming sound? And, oh my lord, that smell... is that FEET? Ah, here we've hit upon the snag of train travel... it is not very private. Plus, we haven't solved that ground transportation problem, either. The train drops you off at the train station, not at the tourist attractions, where you and hundreds of other happy travelers are on your own with your piles of luggage to arrange some kind of transportation get you to where ever your final destination is.
So, where does this leave us? Actually, at the best of all possible solutions to this navigation nightmare; the charter bus! I can hear you now... what? A bus? Are you kidding me? Hey, take a moment and just hear me out. First, forget about the mass transit or school bus memories or nightmares that may have popped into your mind - that's not what this is about in the slightest! A really good charter bus is more like a luxury land-roving cruise ship of the highways and byways of our great nation and offers the best of all forms of transportation, particularly for large groups. Charter buses are quiet, affordable, clean, safe and dependable, and can comfortably accommodate groups of up to 40 or more passengers.
Like planes, you can get up and use the facilities. Unlike planes, you don't have to get to the pickup location 1 hours before your bus is scheduled to leave, wait patiently to get through security, worry about missing a connection, or resign yourself to cramped surroundings.
Like automobiles, you can enjoy the scenery through the windows and ask the driver to stop when something catches your interest. Unlike automobiles, traffic and resulting stress and road rage is not your concern, nor do you have to worry about finding your destination on the map as you drive while arguing with your spouse. The driver of the coach has done that for you, finding and arriving at the appointed destination that is... arguing with your spouse is still your job!
And lastly, like trains, there's plenty of room to move around, and you often have free Wi-Fi, or perhaps a movie to watch. The seats are large and comfortable with plenty of leg room, you can carry-on a conversation, watch the scenery drift past, or snooze as you cruise. Unlike trains, however, parking is a snap... the driver drops you off at the door of your hotel or entrance of the attraction you wish to visit, and parks the bus while you take in the fascinations of your destination. Really... how easy can it get?
So, next time you are planning on taking a trip with a group, consider the benefits of traveling by charter bus. Relax, sit back, and enjoy the ride!
