Getting To Know Adams
John Adams was the second president of the United States and was preceded by George Washington and succeeded by Thomas Jefferson
. He served one term from March 4, 1797 to March 4, 1801.
Previously, he served as the vice president to George Washington for two terms from 1789 to 1797. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States because of his involvement with the country's early history.
He was born on October 30, 1735 in Braintree which is now known as Quincy Massachusetts and died in the same place on July 4, 1826 at the age of ninety. His final resting place is at the United First Parish Church in Quincy, Massachusetts.
He was married to a woman named Abigail Smith Adams and they had six children together. The children's names are Abigail (nicknamed Nabby), John Quincy, Susanna, Charles, Thomas, and Elizabeth.
Their last child Elizabeth was still born. He was part of the Federalist Party and went to the Unitarian church.
He tried running for reelection for president after his first term, but was defeated by Thomas Jefferson (who served as vice president with him) in the year 1800. He retired to Massachusetts with his wife.
He continued his friendship with Thomas Jefferson even though he lost a chance at a second term of office to him. His son John Quincy Adams ended up being the sixth president of the United States.
John Quincy Adams had achieved some remarkable things while in office and has received recognition after he died. But his contributions to this nation were not celebrated as those of the other founding fathers of the United States.
John Adams served as a delegate in the Continental Congress and helped Congress to declare independence. He helped Thomas Jefferson in writing the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.
He was instrumental in getting loans from bankers. He disagreed with the Stamp Act because it deprived the colonists of two of their basic rights.
He believed that all free men deserved to be tried by the jury of their peers and to be taxed only be their consent. While he was in office, he built up the Navy where he added six more frigates like the USS Constitution.
He believed that it was important to build up the army to protect themselves so it was worth it to him to raise taxes to help pay for it. Tax law has changed significantly since then and it continues to change which is why we now have lawyers and attorneys to help people pay their taxes.
It has gotten a lot more confusing and the process has become more complicated since the constitution was written, so people hire professionals to help them. When John Adams was in office, the government was not in debt and they were able to pay for the larger army without going into more debt.
He stressed civic virtue and was never involved with any scandal while in office. He made himself an example of republican values while he was the president and tried to follow George Washington's example.
His worst mistake that he made was keeping the old cabinet instead of finding his own people to be in it. He also continued many of the programs that George Washington set up because he had the same values and thought that George Washington did a good job and he wanted to continue what was started in the previous term of office.
When he ran for president in the election of 1796, he was running against another Federalist who was named Thomas Pinckney who was the governor of South Carolina at the time. He did not have a running mate like presidential candidates do today because whoever comes in second automatically became the vice president.
He was known as a great American politician and a political philosopher in this country and was very influential in the American Revolution and other important events in early American history. He died on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence at his home and only died a few hours after Thomas Jefferson on that same day.
