Getting Treatment For Herpes
Genital herpes is a condition that no one ever wants to deal with
, but it is a very real concern for people that have an active sex life. Although it is a chronic condition, the good news is that the condition usually responds well to herpes treatment, and there are many solutions available that will help control the symptoms of the disease.
Antiviral drugs are the most commonly prescribed treatment methods for genital herpes. In addition to reducing the severity of the symptoms and shortening the duration of each episode, these drugs can also help prevent the symptoms from appearing in the first place. Although they will not actually cure a case of herpes, they can make the condition much easier to live with. For people afflicted with the condition, the effect of these medications is the next best thing to a cure.
Medications used in the treatment of herpes fall under three major categories: acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir. All of these medications come in pill form, and they are commonly prescribed for mild to moderate cases of herpes. For more severe cases, doctors usually prescribe intravenous treatment with acyclovir.
In your search for a treatment for herpes, you may have come across topical solutions that claim to clear up the condition permanently. Such formulations do not actually work for the treatment of herpes, and any apparent benefit you may derive would most likely be a placebo effect. Most doctors don't recommend such "solutions", since in addition to providing no benefit they may actually mask the symptoms of the condition and make it more difficult for doctors to provide a remedy that does provide some benefits.
The typical course of treatment for herpes proceeds as follows. An initial diagnosis of herpes in which there are sores present will require treatment with antiviral drugs. This treatment typically lasts for 7 to 10 days, and is intended to hasten the healing of the sores and prevent them from worsening. If the sores do not improve within that period, your doctor may either extend the treatment period or explore an alternative form of herpes treatment.
The second stage of the treatment of herpes will involve continued antiviral therapy, with your doctor giving you two options: intermittent treatment and suppressive treatment. With intermittent treatment for herpes, you will be prescribed medication that you can take whenever the symptoms reappear. You can even take these medications before the symptoms start to appear, since people with herpes can usually predict when the sores will flare up a few days before they actually occur. These drugs are meant to be taken for 2 to 5 days, and they can reduce many of the symptoms of herpes.
Suppressive treatment is administered to people in whom outbreaks are frequent occurrences. This herpes treatment will involve taking antiviral drugs every day. For people who have several outbreaks a year, suppressive treatment can reduce these instances by as much as 70% to 80%. Most people who take such drugs daily usually show no symptoms at all.
