Despite our current Indian education offering high academic standards, the craze for foreign education remains intense. While the students look for an international exposure and a great boost in their CV, study usmany Indian institutes are cashing upon this trend. It is for this reason that they offer twining programmes where the student is asked to study one year in India and the second in UK and the degree they get is awarded by UK institutions. But the main question we must ask is the UK degree from an Indian institute worth it?

Is the Degree Valid?

This question clouds the minds of most of the students who are going for this programme. Like Harsh Tondon pursued BBA from Institute for International Management and Technology. He passed out with BBA degrees from both IIMT and Oxford Brookes, as the former has a partnership with this UK-based institute. However, Tondon faced a huge problem as he could not pursue a Masters from a UGC or AICTE-recognised university in India. This was because of the fact that he did not have a government recognised Bachelors degree. It is for this reason that he had to pursue a distance-learning programme. Another option for such students is pursuing further studies from abroad. But can you afford it?

Are these partner UK institutes good?

One must also ask are these partner institutes (which are generally private institutes) good? The standing of these private colleges in their home country is also questionable. As per experts, most of the UKstudy us education providers that have tie-ups with Indian institutes were polytechnics and only received University Stauts after a change in legislation in 1992. These private institutes look for international collaborations with Indian institutes because it brings a flow of income from accreditation services.

Money speaks

There is a huge debate that India is considered as a cash cow as these UK universities earn more than one crore rupees merely from its validation services. In many cases the course is not identical and Indian students do not even have access to their learning resources.

Are such Collaborations Legal?

A media report recently said that though foreign institutes imparting technical education in India are required to obtain an approval from AICTE, they hardly take it. There is hardly no legal framework to recognise qualifications awarded by foreign institutes on the basis of programmes delivered entirely in India.

Will you get the chance to work in the UK

Students believe that such degrees will help them to get a job in the UK. However, UK companies do not give much weightage to such degrees and when it comes to offering a job, UK students get a preference over foreign students.

Hence, if you want to study in UK you must follow these steps-:

1) Choose a British Accreditation Council or BAC-accredited institute

2) Go to British Council if required

3) Check the university website

4) Check the history, background and legality of collaboration to ensure that the degree is not illegal or invalid. Check with QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) about the authencity of the degree.
