Getting Your Caravan Ready For Winter
Ensuring that your caravan is prepared and well cared for over the chilly winter
months should be top on the list for every owner, as neglecting certain maintenance tasks and failing to store your van correctly could cause all sorts of problems when you try to pull it out in the following spring. Use these tips and guidelines to ensure that your caravan is ready for the period of unuse ahead and you will find that your van lasts you for a number of happy years.
Empty the space
When packing up your caravan for the winter, it is important that you empty the inside as well as you can. Start by getting rid of any left over food or water, as this will help to prevent malodor, moisture and insects from finding their way into your caravan over the coming months. You should also remove as much of the remaining contents as possible, including pots and pans, the cushions from the seats and the mattresses from the beds, as this will prevent these items from growing damp.
Clean the interior
You should give the whole inside of your caravan a thorough clean and a polish (including the furniture and the appliances). It is also a good idea to clean out the pipes (using a sterilizing fluid, like the ones used to clean babies bottles) to prevent any potential contaminants from growing unchecked over winter. Leave the refrigerator door open to prevent mould growth, leave the taps in the on position and plug the sink.
Drain the tanks
It is of the utmost importance that you ensure both your gas and water supplies are switched off. You can then go through and make sure that all of the tanks attached to your caravan are empty, including both the hot and cold water storage tanks. This is important, as any water that is left in these containers could freeze over the winter and cause the tanks themselves or even the caravan's pipes to crack or split.
Once you have prepared your caravan for storage over the winter, it is time to decide where you are going to shelter it. A paid for storage yard is fine, as is your garage, carport, driveway or backyard (so long as you have the proper security devices in place). You should also jack the caravan up so that it rests on axle stands, as this will take the pressure of the tyres and make sure that they are in tiptop condition next spring.
