Seeing that your ex is still in love with you, it is very probable that he/she reciprocates by saying that it is a great idea, and that he/she will do the same. You have identified the problems in your relationship, communicated with each other, and decided how to fix your problems together.

It stands to reason then doesn't it - if you co-operate with each other, and keep the lines of communication open, then this is a very effective way to reverse a break up.
