Getting Your Picky Eater To Eat
Previously, it was a normal practice for parents to insist that their child clean their plates no matter what
. Thankfully we're no longer so rigid in our views, we now welcome alternative ways to encourage our child to eat healthily and taste unfamiliar dishes. Parents naturally want their children to eat properly, but some children refuse to try anything new. Try these tricks to handle a picky eater and make mealtimes more fun.
If you have the time - and energy - you could try to make a funny picture out of every meal you serve. However, there are some children who are not easily fooled and would still refuse to eat. Instead, try offering a choice of alternatives. Put two or three new or different types of food on the plate with the foods they like and will eat - in small quantities so as not to be threatening. Each of the family members should be treated the same. Have each one on the table try out one of the new food in their plate so that it looks like everyone is subjected to the demand and not just your picky eater.
Play a game of guess the food. Prepare a plate of the food they normally eat, then place a few pieces of new food along with his favorites. Your child has to close their eyes, and you place each different type of food into their mouth one at a time. Now, based only on the taste, they have to tell you what's in their mouth. When it comes to the new food and they don't know the answer, make sure you ask them if they liked it and then when they open their eyes, tell them it's the food they wouldn't try or the food that said they didn't like.
Seeing his friends eat a variety of dishes may get your child intrigued enough to try out a few himself, so bring ask his friends to eat at your home. Letting your child eat at somebody's house is also an excellent opportunity to let him try some new foodstuff, there he would be too polite to turn away that was served before him.
Surprise you child the next time you go to the restaurant, tell him that this one time he can order from the 'adult' menu. There is one condition though - they have to eat at least half of the meal. Can you guess what they'll order?
Don't worry too much if your child picks at his food, at least their getting some form of nourishment. As long as your child is healthy and growing, you should not pressurise them too much. You shouldn't push food too much on your child, it could have some very adverse effects later on.
