Getting back on the Road after an Accident

Getting back on the Road after an Accident

We all try to be careful on the roads but many people are unfortunate enough to be involved accidents. The severity of each accident is different but for any drivers involved it is important to regain confidence on the road. This is easier said than done and it takes some people longer than others to recover enough to get behind the wheel again.

Finding closure is the first step to recovery and getting your fears off your chest will help you to find closure. There are many resources available to talk about your experiences, including online forums of people who have previously had a road traffic accident.

The important thing to remember is you can not turn back time so whether you were at fault or not, it is time to put it behind you. Hindsight is a great thing and looking back you may or may not have done something different but when you are driving and get into that sort of situation you often have to make a split second decision. The most important thing to do is to learn from your mistakes, this is true in all walks of life but especially on the road.

Although you should not ponder on how you could have avoided the accident, thinking about the speed you were doing or how much you were paying attention to the road should reduce your chances of it happening again. You are bound to be more cautious when you get out on the road again but this is not a bad thing.

Felipe Massa, the Formula 1 driver suffered a horrendous injury during the 2009 Grand Prix when a spring fell off a competitor's car and struck his helmet whilst he was travelling at over 160mph. Fortunately he has made a full recovery since the accident and he has got back in to the driving seat of his Formula 1 car less than a year after the accident happened. This was an accident that was unavoidable but one that nearly ended fatally.

When you do get back in the drivers seat take it easy and do not go out of your comfort zone. It may help if you have an experienced driver in the car with you or a close friend or relative, as this should help you feel more comfortable about getting back on the road. Take care whilst on the road this year and keep your wits about you.
