Gianni Truvianni's "New York's Opera Society" Chapter 30
19:00 hours came around on the day of the party or opera lovers get-together as I liked referring to it. My father had gotten home from work early in order to be showered, shaved and changed on time for when the first guests were due to arrive.
Seven pm was the time that my mother felt was the best time for us to start getting ready for the opera lover's get-together. Fortunately, our apartment was spacious enough for my mother, father, sister and me to get ready at the same time without having to take turns using bathroom. As for myself; I did not do anything to get prepared that I did not do on any other evening on which I needed to look my very best. My mother and sister (who surprisingly enough was not on tour), helped each other get ready in the way most women do and by 8 pm my sister, my father and I were ready for my mother's inspection which she carried out by having us go to the family room; to see if we were as she put it "presentable". Gosia was nowhere to be found during this inspection as she was going to be arriving with Barbara and Brad.
After having received my mother's nod of approval I walked around our apartment and noticed for the first time how much work my friends, mother, household servants as well as I had put in to trying to make this party one to remember. We had brought in tables and coat racks (my mother could not stomach the idea of coats being pilled on her bed) from our Long Island home.
As I looked around contemplating how this evening would unfold, I could see the many dishes of food that had been ordered by my mother from not only Panni Beata's but from six different restaurants. The restaurants were a French one, a Thai one, an Italian one, a Moroccan one, an Indian one and last but not least a German one. It was kind of funny the way my mother had set up the food, arranged in such a way that every country had its own little or not so little place on one of the tables; so what our guests would be looking at was something like this. Every table divided in to four parts, each part was for the food that had come from one of the restaurants. I told my mother that this set up reminded me of the world's fair; where every country represented had its own stand next to each other. My father even suggested more in jest that my mother place a flag in front of each section of food, so that the diners would know what country's food they were trying. This an idea which my mother even considered but gave up on, as it would have been an overly silly thing to do.
There was also a separate 4 meter table which my mother being the health fanatic she was felt compelled to fill with fruit juices and bottles of Perrier mineral water. I could also see that my father, as was his custom was going to be serving as bartender for the evening, as he had made sure that we would have a fully stocked bar with all the amenities that a bar required. This meant several bottles of tequila, vodka, whisky, gin, rum and many other kinds of liqueur which my father was going to be in need of in order to make short and long drinks.
