Gift Delivery For Those Who Leave It Until The Last Minute

What is the worst and most blatantly obvious last minute present you ever received

? Petrol station wilting flowers don't count. Mine was and I kid you not, about 25 Christmases ago, when I was invited to my sister's husband's family Christmas. Not really knowing them, I didn't think I was expected to bring anything except the obligatory box of chocs for the mum slaving away in the kitchen. To which she said, with all the enthusiasm of some paper cups, "Gosh. Thanks. More chocolate. Just what I needed."

But there was worse to come. For after we stuffed ourselves silly, out came the presents, for everyone, myself included. Now just as I didn't know them, they really didn't know me. So imagine my surprise when my obviously last minute present turned out to be an out of date box calendar, even the wrong year by about five years. Every day had its own little enigmatic quip of wisdom by Yoko Ono. The brother-in-law's father looked ever so pleased with himself, reading my look of the terror of inappropriate laughter as something approaching delight and surprise. He said, in a deep Brooklyn accent (for that was where he was born and bred) "I figured you was the arty type, you know, cos you wear all those black clothes and read books and stuff. It's a little out of date but when I saw it at the flea market (Yank equivalent to car boot sale) I thought, 'This is one for that arty sister of hers,' (pause) So do you love it, or do you love it? Look, it's even got its own little pen, which is also black. Ironic, huh? "

"Oh, I adore it. I think Yoko Ono has been much maligned. She's really very clever and this will really give me something to think about every single day of, um, well, technically five years ago, but I think it will work this year, too. How very thoughtful of you."

Well, we need to tell you, last minute present giving ( and getting) has come a long way since then, what with the internet, the joy of gift delivery and better still, a fantastic ruse to make a last minute present look really well thought out and considered. We are talking about personalised gifts, ones embossed with the person's name, or special date, or something that means something special to that person and that person only. It doesn't have to be last minute, not technically, because you can order in advance online, with gift delivery to the person or to yourself to give in person.

Make no mistake, there are still presents you can give to someone you do not know very well, or at all and make them a little bit special. All you need to do is find out one thing, a special date, a hobby (golf, gardening, Suduko,) or a hankering for stuff you can't get anymore (sweeties they stopped making, but actually are making - i.e not poisonously out of date) and giving it in person, you can hand it over with a meaningful glance that says "I've done some investigation" which actually means you have made a quick phone call and visited a website for personalised gifts, that does gift delivery.

Now, we ask, is it better to give or receive a last minute gift? On the one hand, if you can personalise it, order it and get it sent, then it seems less last minute than it is. On the other hand, a jokey present (say, novelty loo roll) might not go down too well, so to speak, with someone who hasn't got that kind of sense of humour. But then, they can always give it to someone else who does. Receiving a last minute gift by post means you don't have to feign delight actually in front of the person and more to the point, with the availability of personalised gifts to suit every taste and budget, it's pretty hard to get it badly wrong. You are bound to like it a little, even a lot, or know someone else who will adore it. (But best not send it back to the person who gave it to you). The real beauty of last minute gifts on the internet is that you can do it in minutes, but make it seem as if it has taken ages and that you really care, deep down.
