Most women who need this type of management, a gestational diabetes diet, do not need any type of hospitalization. This will give a quick look at how to treat these women.

The treatment begins with gestational diabetes diet, and it is maintained at 2000 to 2500 kilocalories per day. If a person was given 1700 kilocalories per day, a reduction in the size of the fetus would not be seen. If the mother took in 50 percent carbohydrates, they would see weight gain, and she would be hyperglycemic after meals.

Blood sugar levels need to be monitored at home, and they should go in for doctor visits as well. They can see the doctor once a week at a minimum to monitor sugars to see how the gestational diabetes diet is working for them.

When the mother has her sugars monitored, she should be seeing blood sugar levels less than 105 milligrams per deciliter. If her results are higher, she needs insulin therapy which will be prescribed by a doctor.

When all is said and done, the way to see whether any of this treatment worked is to see how the fetus has reacted. If the baby is large which is what high sugars in the mother will do, then treatment is not successful. The baby will be monitored by ultrasound throughout the course of the pregnancy to ensure its health.

Women who are pregnant and have high blood sugars need to see a doctor to begin a regimen of restricted dietary treatment. This is the first line of treatment for these women, and if this does not control blood sugars, they need to be treated with insulin. The mother also needs to monitor her sugars regularly at home and by going to the doctor. The ultimate result will be a healthy baby, if the gestational diabetes diet treatments were successful.
