The 7 stanes are seven mountain biking destinations covering the south of Scotland, from the heart of the Scottish Borders to Dumfries and Galloway. Stane' is the Scots word for stone, and at each of the 7 stanes locations, you will find a stone sculpture depincting a local myth or legend.

These 7 stanes are discovered on the trails in the forests, in specific locations near cycling and walking paths.

When there is a discussion about 7 stanes of Scotland, Glentrool has its own stigma and pride. Here, you can discover the wild heart of Galloway with a wide range of riding experiences. Unlike the other 7 stanes trails, the whole of the Big Country route is on minor public and forest roads, without any single-track. It offers eye-catching views of lochs and hills contrasting with sheltered woodlands, and some risky climbs and big descents in the course of its 58 km. It guarantees a full day enjoyment filled with excitement. Apart from big country route, Glentrool has two green-graded routes The Glen and the Palgowan, as well as the blue-graded Green Torr route. The glen is a short track which shares the easy single-track of the first half of the blue route, take you around the Palnagashel Glen and descends on forest roads back to the visitor centre.

On the other hand, the Palgowan is longer. It starts on the same single-track of the Glen route. On this route, you will go towards the north on forest roads and a farm track to Palgowan before returning via a climb and long decent around Glencaird Hill.

The Green Torr is a multi-purpose-built single-track. The first part rises gradually up through the forest to a ridge overlooking Loch Trool, before a excited 2.5 km section takes you back down to the visitor centre.
